The Coffee Stories project is a unique and creative approach to collecting and sharing life changing stories that have happened to people in a coffee shop. This content was gathered through crowdsourcing, which is an innovative open call to a community of contributors-for-hire by way of Amazon’s Mturk. These stories mark the beginning of a series of creative business endeavors that start with the book and end wherever the brainstorming process leads. The same collaborative process that has produced the book will determine where Coffee Stories will go in the future. First of all yes, I am in fact schizophrenic, I'm changing the blog name again.
Or rather the location and keeping this one open soo if you're reading it for the sci fi and review content (and other random wonderfulness), check out the new blog, heisenblog.blogspot.com.
I'll give a speech about why I changed it soon, probably tonight (on the new blog), and expect new and random things to start appearing on this site.
Anyway, continue to read my blog, all three of you who do, and I'll start putting out more stuff again.
As previously mentioned, if I could pick any book in my library to write, Nueromancer would be it.
This is not to say that this is the best book I've ever read, the text does have a flaw or two (for instance, the book doesn't quite know how to end). It does, however, have all of the elements that make a novel (or more contextually specific, a science fiction novel) successful.
Take the following excerpt for example:
"There is always a point at which the terrorist ceases to manipulate the media gestalt. A point at which the violence may well escalate, but beyond which the terrorist has become symptomatic of the media gestalt itself. Terrorism as we ordinarily understand it is innately media-related." (Neuromancer Ace paperback edition, 58)
And people wonder why I love science fiction. Or maybe, more accurately, people wonder about science fiction in general; it does have a pretty nerdy stigma attached to it.
Well, there's no other genre were you can find such an outstanding balance of entertainment and intelligence.
Pseudo-non sequitur: when I was 12 years old I saw Hackers. Now Hackers is certainly not a good movie, but when you’re a sheltered 12 year the oozing angst, criminality and sexuality is explosive. This novel reads with that exact level of raw excitement mixed with the bone jarring adrenaline assault of action and suspense found in the film version of the Jason Bourne series thrown on top of the intellectual and prophetic styling’s of science fiction pioneers like Dick and Delany.
This book has terrific characterization. I don't think I will ever be able to write an anti-hero that doesn't at least slightly resemble Case. All the other characters feel really authentic as well. This is true even down to the cultural reality of each character. Nueromancer is so fully realized that entire demographic shifts are obvious. The ways the different slang vocabularies are used by demographically separate characters are a perfect example of this.
Anyway, long review short, this is a great, frenetically (dare I say chaotically?) paced, intelligent, well written (dare I say organized?), action packed and entertaining story (see I told you I'd explain the organized yet chaotic comment). A solid A.
To quote the eminently quotable Bender, I'm back baby...
Yes, I know I promised movie reviews and book reviews and then silence...
Well I've been busy okay! And yes, watching 20 something hours of football over the weekend counts as busy (quick weekend recap: not even I believed VaTech would pull it out against Miami, turns out we have their number; Michigan looks like the real deal; and Houston, come on! I think a pee wee football team could post a big play on you guys).
So it turns out I didn't actually see any of the movies I meant to this weekend. Yes I know I've been talking about Surrogates for a while now, but you'll have to wait a little longer for my review... or just see the movie yourself.
Besides, it's not like anyone really reads this anyway... I mean I read it, and I write it too... So it's kind of like I'm just talking to myself... Hm...
I am not crazy
Yes you are
Shut up!
(what? that joke is really played out? okay, well I thought it was funny)
I do however have a review of Neuromancer coming up. Let me tell you, this was one amazingly awesome outstanding kickass (plus however many more positive adjectives can I cram in here) piece of writing. It's exactly the type of book I wish I could write, no not the type of book, it's exactly the book I wish I could write: dangerous, exciting, prophetic, thought provoking, structured, chaotic... yes it's structured and chaotic, and that does to make sense. You'll see when you read the review gosh darnit. Expect the review tomorrow.
